Trend 1: Family History of Hypertension
Based on the profiles, Parent 1(hypertension), Parent 2(pre-hypertension), and Paternal Grandparent 2(hypertension) have the common chronic disease in relation to high blood pressure, which is a essential hypertension.
Potential sources:
<Biological> Old age: The possibility of developing hypertension increases with aging. The reason behind this is that arteries become hardened and the body does not process salt as well as before, thus elder people become more sensitive to salt. Therefore, blood pressure is expected to rise with age and this seems to be the reason why the prevalence of hypertension is high among those first-degree relatives in my family history profile.
<Psychological> Personality: Personality characteristics such as anxiety and anger are associated with essential hypertension. Parent 2 and Grandparent 2 seemed to have a Type A personality. From my observation, they are quite competitive (it is probably because they both are the eldest sons, thus feel urge to succeed in such a competitive society for their families) and try to do more than one thing at a time, such as reading newspapers or watching television while eating. Parent 2 suffers from a burden of work and tight salaries, and Grandparent was an owner-operator of small market so running his own business and dealing with many clients might caused a high level of stress. Therefore the behavior of Type A personality types makes the mentioned relatives more prone to blood pressure, which is considered to be a stress-related illness…
